Authorisation as a sworn translator/interpreter in Lower Saxony, Germany
(As of July 2011)
I have not be able to take the test required to be authorised as a sworn translator/interpreter here in Lower Saxony, Germany. During alomst two years, it was not possible to be sworn in as translator/interperter. The reason: no legal regulation for the execution of the test and the follow up control of the authorised and sworn translators and interpreters existed!
This changed as of January 1st, 2001.
New law concerning sworn translators/interpreters
During its last session in December 2010, the Federal Government of Lower Saxony passed the new law concerning sworn translators/interpreters. It took the federal state government almost two years to - as one of the last federal states in Germany - implement a simple desicion made by the Federal Administrative Court.
Very impressive!
More information about the new law can be found at :
www.recht-niedersachsen.de
After a closer examinaton of the wording of the law, extensive research as well as weighting all cirsumstances
I deliberately refrain from making an application to become a sworn translator and interpreter,
even if I do fulfill requiremnets.
- the legislator's complete lack of practical understandig of the realization of short notice assignments
- lacking of practical relevance concerning the relation between perfomance and costs
- depreciating treatment of the highly qualyfied occupationaly gruop of translators and interpreters
Among other things, colleagues tell that on the part of Lower Saxony's administrative bodies substantial press is being put on translators/interpreters to sign a formal obligation concerning fiexd fees according to § 14 des JVEG [Legal Remuneration and Compensation Act].
As a self-employed translator with migration background and a (more than) full order book with orders from customers and clients in Germany as well as abroad who acknowledge the high quality perfromance of their freelance colleagues by paying reasonable rates and respectful treatment, I expressly reject the ferderal state Lower Saxony as a client.
